FLOW WRAP PACKAGING: THE MOST WITH THE LEAST HIGH PROTECTION, LOW IMPACT

Edited by a group of researchers in Design at the Politecnico di Torino, Flow Wrap aims to generate culture on the topic of flowpacks

This publication investigates the role of a packaging type that perfectly represents the flexible packaging sector: flow wrap packaging. The White Paper summarises the key stages of its evolution, from the production sector to design aspects, and its role in society and consumption. The activities were conducted by a group of researchers from the Department of Architecture and of the Politecnico di Torino, in constant dialogue with the various components of the supply chain involved with the packaging, at both a national and international level. The findings were then collated and made available to a broader public through the drafting of this document, a scientific publication structured in such a way as to generate culture on the theme of flow wrap packaging. The current and future challenges faced by this packaging, linked to the innovations of production materials and technologies, and new ways of containing, selling, consuming, and communicating, are increasingly geared towards sustainable solutions.

A White Paper which investigates the history of a flexible packaging

What is the role of flow wrap packaging in today’s world and that of tomorrow? A White Paper, resulting from a collaboration between academics and key figures in the industrial packaging sector, investigates the theme.
The publication, entitled “Flow wrap packaging: the most with the least. High protection, low impact” was curated by the Politecnico di Torino in collaboration with leading companies and specialised groups, and will be presented on Thursday 5th May during Ipack-Ima.
“The study was conducted by a Design research unit of the Politecnico di Torino, but in continuous contact and discussion with the numerous national and international parties involved” write the curators Beatrice Lerma and Doriana Dal Palù in the publication’s foreword.
The impetus for the project was the intuition of Riccardo Cavanna: “The White Paper seeks to bring the world of the circular economy closer to that of policy makers and new generations capable of influencing future consumer trends. To avoid there being more flow wrap packaging than fish in our seas, we need to be world leaders, not only in the packaging sector (where Italy is already at the forefront), but also by stimulating and exporting a supply chain development model for a genuinely circular economy“.

PACKAGING MACHINE MANUFACTURERS

Packaging machinery automates the process of forming the packaging, in relation to the product it is to contain, with the aim of making it faster, therefore more economical, increasing the company’s productivity. In each sector, then, packaging responds to specific needs: from the need to preserve the contents intact, to the need to avoid external contamination from production to consumption of the product itself. For example, the packaging of food products responds both to the need to keep the product intact, and to keep it in safe hygienic conditions. It is precisely in relation to the function that the packaging must fulfil that the automatic machine is designed: for example, packaging machines for food products, including beverages, must allow a packaging process that guarantees adequate hygiene standards.
